Team of the Week: Hoggard Vikings
WILMINGTON,NC (WWAY)–A loss to Carolina Forest on September 7th seems like a distant memory now for Hoggard football. Since that point the Vikings have endured a hurricane and ran their win streak to now three games earning them this weeks Team of the Week.
Their latest win was a 49-12 victory over previously unbeaten Topsail on Tuesday night improving their record to now 5-1. That is now two wins in the past four days for the Vikings and their head coach is pleased.
“I thought we executed at a high level. We have had tons of tests of our maturity with schedule changes and all that. Our guys have responded well so far,” said head coach Craig Underwood.
Due to rescheduling from Hurricane Florence the Vikings will have to play three games in nine days and for the players it has not been easy.
“It is a grind. I am telling you its a grind. Having practice on a early Saturday after our game and then only having one more practice then a game. It is not really what were used too, but we are adjusting,”said senior Anthony Schiavone.
It has been eight years since Hoggard High School has had a losing season and this year it looks like they could be on their way to another Mideastern Conference title. If they are able to take home yet another title it would be their fourth in the past six season. There is still plenty of football left to play in the season, but at Hoggard there is always the expectation to be the best.
“At Hoggard we always try to win the MEC. That is our first goal, even in the spring at the beginning of the season,”said senior kicker Jeremiah Kim.
The Vikings will look to take their next step to a conference title on Saturday night when they take on North Brunswick at 7:00 P.M. in Leland.
