Team of the Week – Laney Buccaneers

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — We’re not done yet, but we’re getting close to the end of our team of the week selections for the current high school football season. Laney is the WWAY-Logo Shoppe Team of the Week.

“We played hard and we got a W in the end.” That’s what Cedric Morrisey told us earlier this week. In fact Laney beat West Brunswick last Friday 28-6. It’s the Buccaneers fourth win in the last seven weeks.

“We came together as a team,” Ryan Williams said. “We came through, we had our mindset to send our seniors out with a final bang. That’s what we wanted to do. Can you do it this Friday vs. Ashley. Of course, that is what type of team we are. We can do it anytime we please to. It looks like you might possibly be in the playoffs this year. Can you make some noise in the playoffs? Always, we always make noise. Everybody know Laney.”

Laney has to beat Ashley in two more nights to make the postseason for a chance TO make the playoffs.
Ashaad Yeoman is the Buccaneers head coach. “I love my guys in the trenches,” Yeoman said. “I would like to give a shoutout to Jaquevon Rogers. He went out with an ankle injury, but he fought through it and came back. Mike Scott did well. Troy Bowman had a real good night. A lot of our kids up front did well. Defensive line was Ryan Dabrowski made some big plays for us. Cedric Morrisey came up with the pick late in the game. The guys in the trenches is where it starts. That’s where the heart of the offense and defense is.”

We asked senior Cedric Morrisey about the untold story of last week’s win. “There’s a player out there a 5-10, 282 pound defensive lineman that caught a pick last week. That’s pretty rare. Other than that, that is all you need to know. You not talking about yourself are you? How you doing? Laugh, laugh.”

With that, let’s give it up for this week’s WWAY – Logo Shoppe Team of the Week, the Laney Buccaneers.

** Did you see our story on the itsy bitsy spider that freaked out the Laney players during the team of the week presentation?  If not, here it is.
