BOILING SPRING LAKES, N.C. (WWAY) — There wasn’t much for South Brunswick to smile about after losing every game over a two year span.

But that all changed three weeks ago.

The Cougars snapped their 19-game losing streak against Heide Trask on September 5. They have also managed to win every game since to give them an overall record of 3-2 this season.

Head Coach Daniel Yow says the feeling around his program is vastly different compared to a winless 2024 campaign.

“This time a year ago, we were going into conference play,” Yow said. “Some of our kids probably would have packed it up and just went through the motions and stuff. As you see here at practice, it’s hot, it’s humid. Our kids are pushing each other. Keep holding each other accountable and try to make sure that we’re keeping going in the right direction.”

Two of their wins this year have been by a single point. The victory of the Titans came off a late two-point conversion. Most recently against Purnell Swett, the Cougars won after making a stop on a Rams’ PAT.

Those battles have given the players confidence in what they are capable of.

“It’s big to know that you can win in a dog fight because everyone wants to blow games out,” senior linebacker Gregor Brock said. “Sometimes you’re not fortunate to get into that success rate. We’re 3-2 right now going into a bye. I can’t remember the last time I’ve ever said that in my life. It’s good to have everyone with confidence and it’s also good to learn how to lead while you’re winning because it’s a whole different ball game.”

The question now becomes how far the Cougars can go. Following their current bye, they start conference play at home next Friday against Red Springs.

Yow and company have seen some of their Southeastern Conference foes drop a few close games, but are solely focused on finishing with a winning record for just the second time since 2012.

“Whiteville is a heck of a program,” Yow said. “They played for a long time last year. South Columbus beat us last year. We’re paying attention and we see things that are going on, but we also know that we got to worry about what we got to control and make sure that we’re putting the best product on the field.”
