Team of the Week: Topsail Pirates

TOPSAIL, NC (WWAY) — Last season the Topsail Football team went just 1-6 in Mideastern Conference play, but last Friday night they got their first conference win out of the way early. The Pirates went on the road on knocked off South Brunswick 38-0, it was their first game since Hurricane Florence.

“Usually we get into playing Wilmington teams or Brunswick County teams and it seems like a lose a little big of swag. So, I was very pleased at how our kids responded last Friday night,” said head coach Wayne Inman.

Topsail’s 38-0 win over South Brunswick last Friday night improved their record to 5-0 on the year. This is the first time in the past decade that the Pirates have accomplished that feat and the first ever under Wayne Inman.

“The more and more we play the more confident we feel,”said quarterback Cody Wallis.

The Pirates have their sights set on winning the Mideastern Conference and state title. Winning is important on any level of play, but the Topsail players see the bigger picture.

“We’re just trying to get the team to rally back after the disaster. We’re trying to give this town and school something to talk about and cheer for,” said Wallis.

Topsail’s quest for a MEC title will continue on Friday night when they hit the road to take on Laney at 7:00 p.m.
