TEAM OF THE WEEK: West Brunswick High rolls along with suffocating defense
SHALLOTTE, NC (WWAY) — Senior Nate Gilbert puts the dee in the defensive tackle position for head coach Kelly Williamson who took over the Trojan football program earlier this year. “This coach I feel like he’s really locked it down,” Gibert told WWAY after practice on Tuesday. “He’s shown us what we need to do. We’re really family oriented on defense. It’s all momentum. As long as we keep each other hyped up we can keep going, then that’s how we make our plays.”
“Our defense is really strong and it’s starting to actually show,” according to West Brunswick senior Tariq Thomas. “Everybody is doing their job and the coaches have helped out a lot with the film. We’re tackling better and our dee line is playing real good.”
It’s not just the dee line. The entire West Brunswick dee has been impressive. West Brunswick did not allow a defensive touchdown against North Brunswick two weeks ago. West Brunswick won 34-7. Earlier this week the Trojans shutout Ashley 25-0 in their conference opener. As for the offense? They were fairly sharp as well. They did it on the ground with Tariq Thomas & Shikeem Hill leading the way, and through the air with Hunter Ashburn and Quinlyn Moore. “Our offense was able to put points on the board when we could,” quarterback Hunter Ashburn said. “Defense has been strong too. They’ve been really working hard in practice. They’ve been stomping us on offense.”
“I think the biggest thing right now is we want to keep flying around,” according to head coach Kelly Williamson. “We want to make it fun. Football is supposed to be fun. We want them to have a good experience playing. The way you have a good experience playing is flying around and getting after it on Friday night.” We’re gonna get after a little school spirit as we give it up for this week’s WWAY – Logo Shoppe Team of the Week. It’s the West Brunswick Trojans.
