Teens turning the tide on plastic at area beaches

KURE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — Keeping our beaches clean is a big job and Teen Ocean Stewards at the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher are stepping up to help.

They are organizing “Turn the Tide Fest” March 30 from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk Gazebo.

The beach cleanup is from 8 to 9 a.m. and volunteers are needed. Reusable gloves and bags will be provided. Participants should bring their own water and sunscreen.

Salty Dog Yoga will lead a donation-based yoga session at the Carolina Beach Boardwalk after the clean-up. Live music, educational activities and a local vendor market go until 12 p.m. The event is free.

Teen Ocean Stewards was a yearlong program focused on environmental conservation and stewardship. Participants met throughout the school year to explore the outdoors and work on coastal conservation projects.

This event, originally planned for September 2018, was rescheduled due to Hurricane Florence.
