The Belle of Topsail forced to retire after 75 years at sea
SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — After traveling the world and carrying passengers for 75 years, The Belle of Topsail is retiring from cruises.
Captain David Luther said because of the age of The Belle and newer Coast Guard standards, The Belle did not pass inspections this year. Luther said it would cost $250,000 for repairs.
“The Belle was built in 1943 and the remainder of the boat was completed in 1950 as The Vagabond,” Luther said. “Since then, she has traveled around the United States as the Snohomish River Queen Chantilly, Benton Belle in Montana, the Belle of Grand Rivers in Kentucky, and others.”
The ship ended up in Surf City in 2007 as The Belle of Topsail. Luther said her last cruise was the Sunday before Christmas. For now, The Belle will remain docked as a bar and restaurant.
After a Facebook Post about the retirement, Luther posted about an emotional response from the community.
“Your comments and photos are bringing tears to my eyes…You have all been family to me. But, You never know what is around the corner.”
The Raven will continue to be available for cruises and pirate school.
