The “Coast Guard Mutual Assistance” program worried about losing its workers due government shutdown

Wilmington, NC (WWAY)– The U.S. Coast Guard risk their lives every day when doing their job. With the government shutdown, many civilian contract workers who provide support to the Coast Guard have been furloughed without pay.

Brooke Millard runs the “Coast Guard Mutual Assistance” program, which provides interest free loans to help civilians, employees, and their families during this government shutdown.

“We don’t want to lose them. We don’t want them to find other ulterior places to work. We want to support these members in particular, because we don’t want them to walk away from the job”, Millard says.

Millard says these loans are critical in helping the workers with food, shelter, and transportation.
