WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It was a sight to see along the Cape Fear River this weekend. The ZIM Mount Rainier is the largest container ship ever to dock at the port of Wilmington.

According to a press release, the ship can hold more than 15,000 twenty-foot container boxes. It’s powered by liquified natural gas and is roughly 1200 feet long.

It’s a part of the ocean carrier ZIM’s new ZCP service, which is a transpacific service. This is the first of the 15,000 TEU class vessels to call our port with more to come.

Transpacific means it will call U.S. East Coast ports and then call several ports in Asia, including several in China, Shanghai, and South Korea.

Furniture, apparel, and DIY (tools and equipment) inbound. Things like agriculture, refrigerated cargo, pulp, and paper outbound.
