Shoppers react to the most expensive Super Bowl ever

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — According to the National Retail Federation, the country is projected to spend a whopping $17.3 billion today on Super Bowl food, drinks, apparel, and decorations. Thats a nearly 5% spike from last year.

Superbowl shopper Brianna Hitch said she plans to spend the game with family.

“We’re making a whole bunch of different foods, we’re having barbeque meatballs, wontons, chicken wings, and we brought our dogs and we’re just going to hangout, celebrate, and have a good time,” Hitch said.

Although inflation is down from last year, according to the Consumer Price Index, prices have continued to climb.

Hitch said that she is feeling the rise.

“I mean I just got these chicken wings and they probably used to be like five bucks and now they’re nine dollars, It’s kind of weird to see everything skyrocket,” Hitch remarked.

The NRF also says the average American will spend around $86 per person this year for Super Bowl celebrations.

This year, Marcus Creech plans to just get the small things.

“We’re going to have, you know, some regular hor d’oeuvres. Nothing fancy, just a small intimate gathering,” Creech said.

Like Hitch, Creech says he’s definitely noticed an increase in the price of his grocery list.

“Yeah that’s pretty much everything, you know, pretty much everything. Everything going up except wages,” Creech said.
