Therapy dogs bring stress relief to UNCW students
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Some UNCW students are de-stressing with canine therapy.
Paws4people and UNCW Library’s Mindfulness Initiative hosted a de-stress event where students could come and pet, love on, and cuddle with therapy dogs going through the paws4people training program.
The non-profit organization trains service dogs, and events like this are able to be held through its minor program with the university.
These events also benefit the dog’s training, allowing for socialization skills with groups of people.
Sara Harts is the Director of K9 Operations and says this is a good outlet for companionship in school.
“For a lot of these kids they don’t maybe own dogs because of the situation, living in dorms you can’t have dogs, things like that, so it helps them have that companionship without having the responsibility of it and, I mean, their faces light up immediately whenever they see the dogs, it’s quite heartwarming to see how it brightens their day,” said Harts.
The next events will be on March 19th and April 9th and 23rd in Randall Hall, room 2008, from 12 to 1 pm.
