#ThisIsThePlace: Brunswick Inn houses not just guests

SOUTHPORT, NC (WWAY) — This place has a whole lot of history.

Dating back to the early 1800s, the Brunswick Inn is a beautiful mansion overlooking the Cape Fear River with views of Bald Head Island and the Oak Island Lighthouse.

The Brunswick Inn, a registered Southport historic landmark, allows guest to soak in the history of this walking town.

The inn does have a forever guest though, a ghost. Owners Jim and Judy Clary say his name is Tony.

“He’s kind of a prankster,” Judy said. “He locks and unlocks the doors. He plays with ladies’ jewelry when it’s laid out on the bed stand. He moves underwear around and he walks the rotunda and you’ll only hear four steps in the night.”

The house was built for Benjamin Smith who was the 16th governor for North Carolina.

The Clary’s bought the house in the late 1990s with no intention of open it as a bed and breakfast, but shortly after changed their mind.
