Thousands of fans cheer on UNCW Seahawks at Trask Coliseum

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — In the Port City about 2,500 fans came out to Trask Coliseum on Thursday to take on the Cavaliers.

The crowd was loud and proud, even throughout the second half as UNCW was trailing UVA.

Sammy C. Hawk and Litty the Leprechaun from Lighthouse Apartments were among the fans who attended.

These are not fair-weather fans.

One student said he has been a Seahawks fan for quite some time.

“I grew up in Wilmington,” UNCW Sophomore Caleb Ward said. “So I’ve grown up going to a lot of UNCW games, and now I’m a student here. And just, I’ve always loved this school. I’ve always loved the basketball team, coming out to the games and it’s just really cool to see them having so much success the last two years.”

This is the second year in a row UNCW has hosted an NCAA Tournament viewing party at Trask Coliseum.

The Seahawks finished out their season with a 29-6 record.
