Three Brunswick County homes and a church struck by lightning during one storm

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Three homes and a church were struck by lightning during the same storm on Monday.

One home was struck in Caswell Beach, causing the home’s chimney to collapse.

Two other homes in Southport were also struck on North Atlantic Ave. and East Moore St. along with a church.

The two homes suffered some minor roof damage, while the church experienced some electrical damage.

Southport Fire Chief Charles Drew said lightning is more common than you might think.

“Your house has about a chance in every 200 houses of being struck by lightning. So, I mean it is an occurrence that takes place,” he said.

Drew added that homeowners can get an electrician to make sure their homes are grounded with surge protection to prevent electrical damage.
