WILMINGTON, NC (CFCC RELEASE) —
Women’s soccer
CFCC 5 Spartanburg Methodist 2
No. 15 Cape Fear Community College added two scores in the second half to build off its one goal lead as the Sea Devils picked up a 5-2 result over No. 20 Spartanburg Methodist on Thursday.
“It was a great way to start off conference play with a solid win against an undefeated opponent,” said Cape Fear Coach Melissa Anderson. “It’s always a great thing when you have multiple players involved in the scoring effort.
“Being ranked 15th in the country in this week’s Top-20 poll only helps to encourage the players and validate their efforts and hard work.:
Five different Lady Sea Devils found the back of the net as Vivian Fernandez tallied and picked up two assists. Nikki Tiller added a goal and assist, while Karlie Yeoman opened the scoring for Cape Fear off a pass from Megan Fouty. Alex Strickland added to the cushion after the break along with Larissa Bonilla.
The Sea Devils have scored at least four goals in three games played this season and moved to 1-0 in conference. Cape Fear (1-0, 3-0) travels to Martinsville, Va. for a date with Patrick Henry CC on Sunday, Sept. 14.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Six collegiate men’s tennis teams will convene on Wilmington’s Empie Park this weekend for the Seahawk Invitational, a three-day event to kick off the fall season.
It will be the first competition for UNCW’s returning Colonial Athletic Association champions, who feature a top-25 recruiting class. The field also includes Campbell, Old Dominion, Georgia Southern, Liberty, Gardner-Webb and N.C. Central in three singles brackets and two doubles brackets.
“We’re very excited to start our year with some quality competition,” said Mait DuBois, UNCW’s eighth-year head men’s tennis coach. “We’re especially excited to be able to go out in the community and host our event at the Althea Gibson Tennis Center. Led by Director Tari Ann Toro, the staff is always very welcoming. We get a lot of support from their members. I encourage all of the junior players to come out and watch some great tennis.
“We have a lot of quality competition coming into town this weekend. Our team is very young and I know this experience will help us a lot and give us a better gauge on what we need to work on. Our guys have been working hard and we look forward to a great tournament.”
Action begins at 9 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday, with the singles slated for 10 a.m. Sunday. Admission is free

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) -– The UNCW women’s soccer team competes in its second tournament in as many weekends when the Seahawks entertain regional rivals Coastal Carolina, Elon and Francis Marion in the Hilton Garden Inn Mayfaire Invitational Friday (Sept. 12) and Sunday (Sept. 14) at the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
Coach Paul Cairney’s club stands 3-3 after splitting an appearance in the Virginia Tech Tournament last weekend in Blacksburg, Va. The Seahawks surprised Wake Forest, 3-2, in an overtime stunner last Friday and fell in a close game to No. 5 Virginia Tech, 2-0, on Sunday.
In Friday’s tourney opener, Elon takes on Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m., followed by UNCW vs. Francis Marion at 7:30 p.m. The Sunday schedule has Elon facing Francis Marion at Noon, with UNCW and Coastal squaring off at 2:30 p.m.
Weather permitting, UNCW’s games in the event will be streamed free on the Seahawk Digital Network via UNCWsports.com. Live stats will also be available on www.UNCWStats.com. Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for 15-under, with the cost covering both games each day.
The Seahawks are playing on their home pitch for only the third time this season. UNCW fell to Georgia Southern, 2-0, on Aug. 24 and then steamrolled past UNC Charlotte, 4-2, seven days later.
Junior striker Katrina Guillou of Ft. Washington, Md., paces UNCW in scoring with six goals and one assist for seven points. Overall, six players have found the net for the Seahawks, who have been outscored by a slim 10-9 edge.
“You can never really guess what your record is going to be,” said Paul Cairney, UNCW’s 18-year head coach. “You hope to be 6-0, but we’ve played some tough competition. I’m happy where we are. We’re playing well, and hopefully we can get a couple wins this weekend.”
Coastal Carolina also brings a 3-3 mark into the weekend affair, but has dropped its last two outings to N.C. State (3-0) and Davidson (2-0). The Chanticleers are looking for their first road win in four tries away from home this fall.
Senior forward Kacey Kelley has been the main offensive threat for the Chanticleers, scoring four of the six goals this season for Coach Paul Hogan’s team.
“Every year that we’ve played Coastal Carolina over the last four seasons in the spring and fall, it’s been a one-goal game,” said Cairney. “It’s always a tough game that’s one goal or goes into overtime. We know it’s going to be an extremely challenging game.”
Elon, a newcomer in the Colonial Athletic Association this season, is coached by former UNCW aide Chris Neal and carries a 1-4-0 record into the event, with a four-game losing streak. The
Phoenix have not scored in their last three contests and have been outscored, 13-3, this season.
Three different players – Mel Insley, Julie Hibberd and Grace Bennett – have each scored once this season for the Phoenix, who had their match at East Carolina rained out Sunday. Elon has been outshot, 64-33, in five games so far.
Francis Marion, embarking on its third season under Frank Pitt, has only played three matches after having Sunday’s tussle with East Tennessee State was cancelled.
The Patriots have lost to Georgia Southern (2-1), Kentucky (5-0) and East Carolina (6-0) by a combined 13-1 margin. Senior forward Chanel Harris scored FMU’s lone goal this season, breaking through in the season-opener against Georgia Southern.
Cairney said, “We went to Francis Marion last year, got up early and they came back and made it difficult. It will be a challenge. They’re well-coached, organized and have really good athletes up front. They’re a team that can catch you with their counterattack and pace.”
Following this weekend’s action, the Seahawks entertain rival East Carolina on Friday, Sept. 19, at 7 p.m.
