Tied races in Brunswick County to be decided by drawing of names from hat

BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — The Brunswick County Board of Elections has revealed its tentative schedule for next Tuesday’s meeting, where a number of races may be decided.

Here is the tentative agenda for the meeting on Tuesday, November 28:

  1. Tied Contests:
    • Bald Head Island Council: Scott Thomas received 106 votes. Jerry Maggio and Virginia (Ginnie) White are tied with 102 votes each for the second seat.
    • Ocean Isle Beach Commissioner: Mike Wade received 309 votes, Mark Holland received 298 votes. David Green and Stephen S. Turner are tied with 219 votes each for the third seat.
    • In accordance with GS 163-292, in case of a tie, the board will determine the winner by lot. Names of candidates will be placed in a hat, and the board chair will draw a name.

    • A recount of the Southport Mayor contest will be conducted. Bipartisan teams will feed all ballots through a tabulator under the board’s supervision. More details on the recount process are available in Numbered Memo 2020-31

The meeting will start at 9 a.m. at the Board of Elections office at 75 Stamp Act Drive NE, Building H, in Bolivia.

Members of the public can attend in person at the Board of Elections office or watch via Zoom. No registration or passcode is required.
