To make Wilmington greener, Volunteers gather to plant trees
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– On Saturday, Alliance for Cape Fear Trees planted more than 100 native trees alongside Wilmington’s Northside neighborhood.
Planting started at Portia Hines Park at 9 a.m. with many volunteers gathering to dig in and plant trees with the support from the New Hanover County Cooperative Extension Master Gardner Volunteer Association, North Carolina Urban Forest Council, and Residents of Old Wilmington.
The area that the trees were planted by volunteers was chosen as it was a historically under-canopied area.
Bob Elkins, board member of the organization, says the new trees planted will help the environment grow.
The canopy restores wildlife in the trees and helps water in the ground. It’s a great thing for the city, and we are very appreciative for everybody coming in to help out,” said Elkins.
Alliance for Cape Fear Trees will once again help the environment by planting trees with Glow Academy, on January 30th.
