HAMPSTEAD, NC (WWAY) — Topsail High School honored the memory of a former teacher and coach by renaming its main gymnasium the “Coach Jamie Rochelle Gymnasium” in a ceremony that drew a large crowd of community members, students, and staff.

The dedication, held at 5 p.m. on Monday, July 8, celebrated the life and legacy of James “Jamie” Rochelle, a physical education teacher and coach who died unexpectedly in June 2023.

Rochelle, a Topsail High alumnus, had served his alma mater for 15 years, coaching golf, football, and basketball, as well as teaching driver’s education and participating in various extracurricular activities.

“We’ve tried so many times to describe the outpouring of support we’ve received from this community; we’re in awe,” said Ed Rochelle, Jamie’s father, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support from the community. “I see Jamie every day.”

The renaming initiative was spearheaded by students, notably Peyton Schlossnagle, highlighting the strong connection between Rochelle and the student body. Page McGraw, another student leader, spoke at the event, further emphasizing the impact Rochelle had on the school community.
