Topsail High School proposes renaming two locations within the school

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Topsail High School is proposing name changes to two locations in the building to celebrate the contributions of two individuals who have left their mark on the school community.
The proposal entails renaming the school’s gymnasium to the “Coach Jamie Rochelle Gymnasium” and dedicating the media center as the “Jan Lewis Media Center.”
“Coach Rochelle has three children (two of whom are currently enrolled at THS), but he had a fatherly presence in many students’ lives,” remarked Peyton Schlossnagle, Student Council Communications and Events Officer. “This remembrance would serve as a deserved recollection of Coach Rochelle’s impact on his students.”
Plans for the gymnasium include the installation of a commemorative plaque and new signage, crafted and hung by students in the school’s Carpentry classes, at no cost to the district.
The renaming process will involve community engagement through two public hearings.
The initial meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, April 17th, at 6:00 p.m. in the Gymnasium, followed by a second session on Wednesday, April 24th, also at 6:00 p.m. All members of the community are encouraged to attend and share their opinions on the proposed dedication.
Pending approval from the community, both renaming proposals will proceed to the Pender County Schools Board of Education for final consideration.
