Town Council to re-evaluate food truck regulations in Surf City

SURF CITY, NC (WWAY) — The Town of Surf City wants to re-evaluate its ordinance on food trucks.

It comes after a new brewery in the town started letting food trucks operate on their property.

Surf City’s town manager said the current law allows food trucks at a fixed business, but they are not allowed on the street. She said it did not specify about where the money from the food truck has to go.

Many business owners took the podium to voice some concern over allowing food trucks from out of town to operate in Surf City.

“I’m not really opposed to them, but I would like to see them regulated a little bit or the ordinance be more written to help us brick and mortar people who have actually spent a lot of money on a kitchen,” Quartermaster’s owner Lance Jordan said.

Salty Turtle Co-Owner Daniel Callendar said they had an attorney look at the ordinance to make sure they could have food trucks on their property. He said he saw breweries in Wilmington bringing in food trucks and said Surf City is progressing.

“We didn’t want to have a kitchen because we knew how to brew beer,” Salty Turtle Co-Owner Daniel Callender said. “We didn’t want to have mediocre food and mediocre beer at the same time so we wanted to focus on the beer aspect so we thought if we could bring in a food truck and give the community just a sense of variety around here, let’s try it.”

As it is written right now, Callender said they can continue to have food trucks at the brewery.

The town plans to discuss the regulations and hold a public hearing at a future date.
