Town of Leland to hold budget proposal Q and A

LELAND, NC (WWAY) – The Town of Leland is announcing its proposed budget for fiscal year 2025-2026. The budget was formally submitted to Town Council on Feb. 24. The budget focuses on the Town’s five strategic priority areas of “safe community, resilient high-quality infrastructure and environment, communication and engagement, organizational excellence, and business and neighborhood enhancement, while also ensuring fiscal responsibility and transparency.”

The proposed $53 million budget reflects no change in the current tax rate of 27 cents per $100 value and includes the following highlights:
• $2.95 million towards road resurfacing projects, continuing a 20-year lifecycle program to resurface 5% per fiscal year
• $1.4 million in emergency contingency funds
• New Public Safety positions: three Fire Captains, three Fire Apparatus Engineers, one Police Traffic Sergeant, and one Police Accreditation Specialist
• New general employee positions: one IT Service Desk Coordinator, one Custodian, and one Economic and Community Development Coordinator
• One Police vehicle for the new position and five Police replacement vehicles
• Town mobile application
• Two Fire apparatus vehicles
• Replacement of Public Safety mobile data terminals for Police Officer and Firefighter safety

The town is encouraging public participation in the budget process. To help residents learn more about the proposed budget, Town Council and staff will be holding a Budget Q&A Forum on March 4 starting at 6 p.m. at Leland Town Hall, located at 102 Town Hall Drive. During the Special Meeting, staff will provide a brief budget presentation and attendees will then have the opportunity to ask questions about the proposed budget to Town Council and staff. The Budget Q&A Forum is an educational initiative intended to better inform residents about the content and value of the proposed budget.

Another opportunity for the public to provide feedback to Town Council regarding the budget will be at
the budget public hearing during the Regular Council Meeting on March 20 at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.
