OCEAN ISLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — On Tuesday, Ocean Isle Beach released an update regarding erosion on the east end of the island.

The town says recent annual monitoring data shows that erosion in a section just east of the terminal groin has exceeded one of those trigger points. They add that they regularly monitor shoreline conditions in this area as a requirement by State and Federal permits.

Now the town must work with state and federal agencies to consider ways to address the erosion like possibly placing sand on the affected section of the beach or making adjustments to the terminal groin.

Ocean Isle Beach emphasized that this requirement is a condition of the Town’s permit issued in 2016 and applies regardless of nearby development, construction, or underlying erosion.

The Town is currently working with its engineering team, the NC Division of Coastal Management, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to review conditions and evaluate possible next steps. No final decision has been made at this time.
