Traffic troubles continue for commuters

LELAND, NC (WWAY) — At the Leland Town Council meeting, folks will be talking traffic. With roadwork causing delays and regular changes in traffic patterns, some folks are concerned about their commutes.

For drivers in the Leland area, dealing with traffic is no new struggle. Continuing roadwork is causing back-ups and long commutes.

“I’m having to change my work schedule to accommodate so you can get to work. I’ve sat here until 8:30 at night once if there’s an accident on the little bridge,” said Jendon Johnson. She works in the Leland area.

“It takes me longer to get from Wilmington to Leland and from Leland to Wilmington,” said Steven McKee of Wilmington.

For many getting on the Causeway is the biggest issue. On Village Rd., crews are working on the new diverging diamond. The area will look completely different in a few months so changes are causing a lot of headaches.

Some, however, remain optimistic about the final product.

“It’s better than it has been in the past years, but with the volume of people that’s here, it’ll probably get better. It just takes a little bit to get used to,” said Robert McKnight of Leland.

The changes are something to get used to for at least another year. That’s when the entire project is scheduled to be complete.

All drivers who commute into New Hanover from Brunswick counties and vice versa will also see some changes next week. A DOT spokeswoman said traffic will be shifted on the new bridge over Alligator Creek next week.
