Tree Fest underway at Independence Mall for 26th year

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– The 26th annual Tree Fest is underway at Independence Mall in Wilmington.

More than 5 thousand grass and tree seedlings were available to give away this year.

plenty of experts were on site to help you pick the right trees and grass for the right place in your yard.

Amy Mead says this project got its start after hurricanes Bertha and Fran to help restore what was lost

“It really started to replenish the tree canopy here in eastern North Carolina. We certainly see a lot of development pressure, and really in urban areas people need to plant trees to replenish those trees that we lose,” said Mead, Area Natural Resources Agent with the NC Cooperative Extension.

The event continues on Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm or while supplies last.

Households may choose up to five free trees or grasses.

A $5 donation per household is suggested.
