Tree removal in downtown Wilmington to begin next week

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Removal of 41 dead and dying trees along several streets in downtown Wilmington is set to begin next week.

According to a spokesman for the city, the trees to be removed are primarily along Market and S. 3rd Streets.

The project was originally slated for earlier this year but was postponed due to detours in place for the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge Restoration.

The trees need to be removed due to disease that could cause them to fall into the road.

Starting June 10, you can expect more traffic in downtown Wilmington as crews begin to remove the trees. Each tree will be replaced during the planting season this winter.
