Troopers: Two die in Pender crashes over holiday weekend
RALEIGH, NC (WWAY) — The North Carolina Highway Patrol says at least ten motorists died in crashes on state highways over the July 4th holiday weekend, according to a news release.
The holiday weekend period officially began at 6 p.m. Friday, ending at 11:59 p.m. Sunday.
In that time troopers report only one crash that resulted in two deaths in our viewing area, which happened around 4:00 pm on NC 53 in Pender County Sunday. Highway Patrol said Armond Lewis Wilson, 65, of Currie, died in the crash in Burgaw. The identity of the second victim has not been released yet.
According to the State Highway Patrol, both vehicles were going 55 mph on NC 53 Sunday. Wilson was driving westbound when an eastbound Jeep crossed the center line and hit his Cadillac.
The Jeep overturned and then stopped on NC 53. Wilson’s Cadillac came stopped in a ditch.
Gabriel Quintino was in the passenger seat of the Jeep. Highway Patrol said he was injured, but was released from the hospital later.
According to the news release, last year the Highway Patrol investigated seven deadly collisions over the July 4th holiday period.
