Trump issues executive order aimed at expanding IVF
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — President Donald Trump has issued an executive order aimed at lowering the cost of in vitro fertilization (IVF).
In an order made Tuesday, the president called for future policies to support lowering of costs associated with IVF treatments.
IVF treatments can range in price from $12,000 to more than $40,000.
The president—who is opposed to reproductive rights at the federal level—said he wants to make IVF treatments more accessible.
“I’ve been saying we’re going to do what we have to do,” Trump said about the executive action on Tuesday.
Dr. Donna Session with Wilmington Fertility Center said the move is a step in the right direction.
“It’s not just for those people that have infertility,” Session said. “Some people are opting for IVF for genetic disorders, and those are expanding as options for patients. There are also patients that have procedures prior to cancer treatments, so that may be their only option.”
On the campaign trail, President Trump said he would require insurance companies to pay for the cost of IVF. That mandate is not included in this latest executive order. 13 states already have laws that require or expand insurance coverage for IVF.
