Turner Brown and ECU reach NCAA Super Regional

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (AP) — Sam Lanier pitched five shutout innings in relief and East Carolina hit three home runs on Sunday as East Carolina completed an unbeaten run through the Charlottesville regional and advanced to the super regional round for the fourth time in program history.

Lanier (2-1) pitched three innings before a nearly 1 hour rain delay and two more after, allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts.

Eric Tyler, Charlie Yorgen and Travis Watkins hit two-run home runs for the Pirates and Parker Lamm drove in their first two runs in a four-run third inning.

East Carolina (37-21-1) will head to the super regional round for the first time since 2009. The Pirates have never reached the College World Series.

The Tribe (31-31), looking to win its seventh consecutive game when facing elimination, pulled even at 4-4 in the fifth, but Yorgen and Watkins homered in the bottom half against Charlie Fletcher (3-3) and Lanier did the rest.
