Two charged in 2014 murder of teen

COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — Two men are facing murder charges in connection with the death of a teen, a spokeswoman with the State Bureau of Investigation confirmed Tuesday.

Teresa West with the SBI said Hakeem Gaines (left), 19, and Tyriek McKinnies (right), 20, were arrested yesterday and are currently in the Columbus County Jail.

Chadbourn Police Chief Robert Mumblow told WWAY in September of 2014 that Travis Bellamy, 16, was shot and killed on West Institute Street. He said Bellamy was talking on his cell phone when a car driven by his cousin pulled up and he began talking to the people inside; soon after, shots were fired from down the street. Bullets hit the vehicle and Bellamy was shot in the side and head.

West said the SBI was asked to assist in the investigation by the Chadbourn Police Department.
