Two fire engines damaged in fire at Nakina Fire & Rescue substation

NAKINA, NC (WWAY) — Two tanker trucks were damaged on Monday during a fire at Pireway Fire Department, which is a substation of Nakina Fire and Rescue.
According to a news release, it happened just before 4:30pm on Monday.
Nakina Fire and Rescue and Tabor City Fire Department were dispatched to to the substation in response to a fire.
When crews arrived, they saw heavy black smoke coming from the building. Inside, they discovered the cab and engine area of Engine 29, a Freightliner Pumper Tanker, engulfed in flames. Another tanker also sustained significant damage.
Nakina says Engine 29 had been involved in an accident less than 24 hours prior while returning from helping Horry County with the Wildland Fires. No one was hurt during that accident or the subsequent fire.
“I would like to personally extend my deepest gratitude to all the responders who came to our aid during this critical event. The quick and coordinated effort from all involved has been nothing short of remarkable. I am also asking that our members, and our paid staff are kept in your thoughts and prayers as we move forward in the coming days,” Nakina Fire and Rescue said in a statement.
Tabor City Fire Department, Brunswick Fire Department, Williams Township Fire Department, Grissettown Longwood Fire & Rescue, Waccamaw Fire and Rescue, North Carolina Highway Patrol, and the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office also responded.
Lake Waccamaw Fire & Rescue provided an engine and ambulance to cover emergency calls during the incident.
Nakina Fire and Rescue said it has emergency plans in place and are working to continue to provide the level of service that our residents expect and deserve.
