Two pedestrians killed crossing South College on the same day

WILMINGTON, NC — Two pedestrians were killed on Saturday in separate crashes on the same road.

The first happened early Saturday morning at around 4:30 a.m. on S College Rd. near Jeff Gordon Chevrolet. Police identified the pedestrian as 40-year-old Steven Barlok.

The second accident happened Saturday night around 10:41 p.m. at the intersection of New Centre drive and S College Rd. 56-year old Edward Williams later died at the hospital.

Wilmington Police are still investigating both crashes.

The Wilmington Urban Metropolitan Planning Organization launched a pedestrian safety campaign called “Be A Looker” back in 2021.

It encourages drivers to watch for bikes and pedestrians.

WMPO Board Member Lynn Barbee notes that many of the major roads in New Hanover County are not well-equipped for the increased pedestrian traffic as the area grows.

“I think we’re going to have to play catch-up over a number of years to get those pedestrian accesses in place, and I think that’s the purpose of this campaign is to let people know just be aware,” Barbee said”

No word yet on whether anyone will face charges in these crashes.
