U.S.S North Carolina Battleship Memorial implementing heat safety measures

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — With excessive heat conditions continuing this week, U.S.S Battleship North Carolina is implementing proactive safety measures to help visitors stay cool, hydrated, and secure during their time aboard the historic vessel and at the Visitor Center.
Measures in Place to Support Visitor Comfort, July 30-August 4:
- Cooling Breezer Stations: Shaded cooling stations equipped with breezers under cooling tents are strategically located on the fantail, offering vital relief from the sun.
- Hydration Access Points: Vending machines stocked with cold water and beverages are available aboard the ship and inside the air-conditioned Visitor Center, ensuring hydration is within reach.
- Shipboard Cooling Station: The air-conditioned Ward Room will be available for public use and is accessible from the main deck doors on both the port and starboard sides. This area is normally off limits to visitors.
- Readily Available Support: Staff and volunteers are stationed throughout the ship to assist with navigation, provide safety guidance, and help guests exit quickly if needed.
Visitors are strongly encouraged to arrive prepared: bring water, dress appropriately for the weather, take advantage of shaded rest areas, and pace activities to avoid overexertion.
