Ukrainian Christmas Festival sets up the holiday mood early

Wilmington, NC (WWAY)– Christmas came early for the cape fear region, but with a Ukrainian twist. More than one-hundred people attended a “Ukrainian Christmas Festival” on Saturday at the Waterline Brewing Company in Wilmington. It featured authentic Ukrainian food, dancing, and traditional Ukrainian music.

Ukrainians in the Carolinas, is the group behind the event. Director of the event, Anastasia Chapman, says the events of the last three and a half years in Eastern Europe have made it even more important to put the spotlight on the nation’s culture.

“It’s very important since Russia have been putting a lot of efforts in the last 30 years to really not only take control of our culture, but also utilize things that are truly Ukrainian, and tell the world its theirs. For example, Borsht is presented a lot of time like its Russian”, said Chapman

Proceeds from the event will go back to families in Ukraine
