Ukrainian Independence Day commemoration held in Wilmington
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY)– On August 24th, Ukrainian Independence Day was observed, but the celebrations continued into Sunday at Innes Park in Wilmington.
This year’s event took on a special significance given the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, which has deeply affected the Ukrainian community worldwide.
The gathering aimed not only to celebrate Ukraine’s independence but also to acknowledge the ongoing struggle for freedom.
Anastasiia Drescher, a Ukrainian native, spoke about the support she has found in Wilmington and North Carolina as a whole.
“Being far away from home, I really appreciate the Ukrainian community here in Wilmington. North Carolina has a large Ukrainian presence, which helps us stay connected and nurture our cultural identities. Today, we are gathering in Downtown Wilmington to remind ourselves and the world why we are Ukrainians, why we are fighting, and why it’s crucial to support Ukraine as an independent nation,” Drescher said.
The Independence Day celebration featured a range of activities, including speeches, poetry, and music, all dedicated to honoring the holiday.
