UNC system drops 46 degree programs, consolidates 10 others

CHAPEL HILL, NC (AP) — The University of North Carolina system has decided to discontinue 46 academic degree programs and consolidate 10 others.

The News & Observer reports similar discontinuations have occurred every two years since 1995. The most recent programs were dropped or merged with other programs in a final vote by the UNC Board of Governors last week.

Among the degree programs disappearing are the theater and jazz programs at North Carolina Central University, and Africana studies and women’s and gender studies at North Carolina State University.

Also eliminated at various campuses were French, German and education degrees.

The UNC system periodically reviews programs that award fewer than 20 degrees in the past two years at the undergraduate level, or fewer than 11 degrees in the most recent year.
