UNC Tar Heels put an end to UNCW’s winning streak


CHAPEL HILL, NC (UNCW) — Kyle Datres bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth lifted North Carolina to a 10-9 marathon win over UNCW in a non-conference baseball game at Boshamer Stadium.

With the win, the Tar Heels (27-15) snapped a modest three-game losing skid while the Seahawks (27-10) saw their 12-game winning streak halted. The game lasted 4:19, a season-long for the Seahawks

Leading the UNC lineup was Logan Warmoth with four hits and Brian Miller with three and two runs scored. Tyler Ramirez scored three times and reached base safely four times.

Hansen Butler (3-0) earned the win, going two innings, while UNCW’s Jared Gesell (1-2) took the loss.

Nick Feight and Casey Golden collected two hits apiece while Feight drove in two runs and Golden added three. Joe Bertone connected on his first home run of the season.

Up next: The Seahawks open an eight-game homestand on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. start against High Point.

Home Runs: UNCW – Bertone (off Daniels in the third inning, one on, one out)

How it happened: In the ninth, Miller singled to open the inning and moved to second on a passed ball and Sutherland followed with a walk. With one out, Ramirez was hit with a 2-2 offering by Gesell to load the bases. Gesell followed with a strike out, but walked Datres on a full count to force in the winning run.

Inside the box score: UNC managed to get its lead-off hitter on base in six innings and that runner came around to score four times … The Tar Heels plated six runs with two outs … The Seahawk bullpen allowed just four hits with runners on base in 18 UNC at bats … Taylor Hyssong held UNC in check over his three innings of relief, allowing one run on three hits.

Notes: Bertone’s home run was the first of the season for him and the 10th of his career … Both teams posted six-run innings with UNC’s coming in the first and UNCW’s in the third … Both of Feight’s hits were doubles and he raised his season total of RBI’s to 70 … Justin Crump lasted just two-thirds of an inning, his shortest start of his career, for the Seahawks and allowed six runs … The game lasted 4:19, featured a combined 15 walks, 11 by UNCW, three hit batters and eight errors, five by UNC.
