UNCW adding new research vessel to fleet
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW is adding a new 73-foot long, research vessel to its fleet.
Once completed, the twin-engine vessel will serve as the largest interdisciplinary research equipment at UNCW.
The vessel will be used for marine sciences and protecting coastal environments, with some of its features including separate dry and wet labs, a deck crane, and other equipment.
“The acquisition of a new research vessel marks a major advancement for our research,” said Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs James J. Winebrake. “This vessel will significantly enhance our ability to conduct advanced marine and coastal studies–reflecting our commitment as the state’s coastal university–and will strengthen our role in preserving coastal ecosystems and supporting the region’s economic and environmental vitality.”
UNCW expects to receive the completed vessel in the spring of 2026.
