UNCW Baseball season stays alive on Kep Brown’s bat

GREENVILLE, N.C. (UNCWSports.com) – Kep Brown’s fourth hit of the game was the biggest as his bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 13th inning lifted UNCW to a 4-3 win over Ohio State in an elimination game on Saturday at the NCAA Greenville Regional.

The Seahawks advance to another elimination game on Sunday and will face the loser of Saturday night’s South Carolina and East Carolina game at noon on Sunday.

UNCW (38-22) notched its eighth walk-off win of the season with the extra inning victory. The Buckeyes, meanwhile, closed out their season with a 36-24 record.

Brown’s four hits tied a UNCW regional-record as did his seven at-bats. Ryan Jeffers and Mason Berne both finished with three hits as UNCW rang up 19 hits. Jeffers and Doug Angeli both had doubles.

Reliever Blake Morgan (2-1) picked up the win with a perfect inning of relief in the top of the 13th.

Noah McGowan paced the OSU lineup with two hits while Jacob Barnwell belted his second home run of the season to give the Buckeyes a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

Up next: UNCW plays the loser of Saturday night’s winner’s bracket game at noon on Sunday.

How it happened: In the 13th, Noah Bridges drew a four-pitch walk and moved into scoring position on a ground ball to second. An intentional walk to Jeffers put runners on first and second for pinch hitter Noah Liles, who singled to left to load the bases. Brown followed one batter later and singled into right field to score Bridges with the winning run.

Inside the box score: UNCW went 7-for-16 with RISP … Meanwhile, Seahawk pitchers held OSU to 1-for-8 hitting with RISP … Both teams combined for six two-out hits (each with three).

Notes: The win was UNCW’s 12th in their final at-bat this season … The Seahawks stayed perfect in extra inning games (5-0) and 15-4 in one-run games … With 51 at bats, the Seahawks set a program record in the NCAA Regionals … 17 runners left on were also a team-record in Regional play … Jeffers belted his 22nd, moving into a tie for third on UNCW’s season list … UNCW reliever Austin Warren allowed one run over 4 2/3 innings of relief … Over his last four outings, Warren 1-0, 2 saves) has posted a 0.68 ERA and struck out 16, walked none, over 13 1/3 innings.
