UNCW beats Wake Forest in baseball
WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Robbie Thorburn homered and added a pair of RBI singles as UNCW plated nine runs in the middle three innings for a 10-3 win over visiting Wake Forest on Wednesday at Brooks Field.
The Seahawks upped their record to 3-0 with the home win while the Demon Deacons evened their mark at 2-2 with the road loss.
Adding three hits apiece and both scoring twice for the Seahawks were Corey Dick and Terence Connelly. Dick doubled in both runs to highlight the sixth inning and Connelly knocked in two with a single in the fifth. Gavin Stupienski added two hits and scored a run.
Sophomore reliever Cory Gantz (1-0), one of nine UNCW hurlers on the afternoon, picked up the win for UNCW while Kelly Garrett (0-2) was tagged with the loss for WFU.
Nate Mondou had two hits for the Deacons, who were out-hit, 15-6. Will Craig singled in two runs in the ninth to make it 10-3.

How it happened: Thorburn belted his first homer of the season to lead off the third and the Seahawks piled on nine runs in the middle frames. He added RBI singles in a three-run fourth and another in a four-run fifth.
Inside the box score: Terence Connelly went 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position and 1-2 with two outs … The Seahawks were 6-for-13 with two outs and plated five two-out runs … Seahawk pitchers held WFU to 3-for-17 hitting with runners on base and just 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position.
Notes: The Seahawks have now won the last five outings in the all-time series but trail, 15-14, overall … Jordan Ramsey fanned the side in the eighth and now has 11 strikeouts in five innings … On a staff day, freshman Austin Magestro threw a team-high 1.2 innings … UNCW (23) and Wake Forest (21) combined to play 44 players on the afternoon … Thorburn tied his career-high with three runs batted in … UNCW righthander Evan Phillips made his season debut in a starting role for UNCW.
