UNCW cross country and track coach steps down
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW’s cross country and track and field head coach is stepping down to move with his family to the west coast, the school announced today.
“It was a very difficult decision, but a necessary one for my family,” Layne Schwier said in a news release. “Wilmington has really become home, and I will miss it tremendously. I want to thank all of the administration and support staff during my time at UNCW. I’m looking forward to seeing the new track facility completed and know it will be a big boost for the program.”
Schwier has led the Seahawk programs since August 2016, when he succeeded Jim Sprecher. The Indiana native was a longtime assistant with the program before serving as interim head coach in 2015-16 and being elevated to head coach two years ago.
“We appreciate Layne’s tireless dedication to the cross country and track and field programs at UNCW,” Athletic Director Jimmy Bass said in a statement. “He’s worked with both programs for almost 15 years, mentoring numerous student-athletes and showing a great deal of passion for the sport. We wish him nothing but the best in the future.”
Schwier plans to move to California in the coming weeks, but will keep up with the Seahawks.
“I want to especially thank our team members. It has truly been a pleasure coaching them,” Schwier said. “I consider myself a Seahawk for life and will always be a fan. I’m looking forward to watching the progress of the department in years to come.”
