WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — UNCW women’s basketball finished a three-game home stand by dropping their final contest during that span 54-46 on Sunday against Hofstra.

Things seemed normal for the Seahawks as they took a one-point lead into the 2nd quarter, only to be outscored 20-11 in that frame. Wilmington had a lot of frustrating sequences where nothing seemed to go right for Head Coach Nicole Woods and company.

“I always say offense is fickle, but the thing that needs to be a staple is your defense,” Woods said. “I always go back to a turning point in the game. I said to them at halftime we were down one with about a minute and some change to go in the second quarter. We went down eight at halftime. That sequence right there was really the back breaker for us.”

Despite trailing by as much as 15 in the 4th quarter, UNCW managed to cut it to one. However, they last played Friday night only to take the floor again around 36 hours later with the players running out of gas by the end.

“It’s hard,” forward Torin Rogers said. “This is my first CAA conference weekend and a lot of others with that one day turnaround. It’s new, but it can’t be an excuse because it’s the first weekend for everybody. While we were probably a little bit tired, I’m sure everyone else was. They were on the road, so they were probably more tired. We just have to push through those.”

The Pride were dead last in the CAA standings with a 2-10 record coming into the game. Woods praised the opposition, but feels the outcome could have gone their way.

“Their record was very deceiving because they lost to Kentucky, they lost to St. John’s, they’ve lost to some high major and really good teams,” Woods said. “Of course it’s a lost opportunity. We definitely could have won this game. But to me, the game was going to be evenly matched and it was going to come down to our execution in terms of our ball security with our turnovers and our rebounding.”
