UNCW holds second Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW held a special event on Friday for young girls interested in playing sports.
The school’s athletic department held its 2nd National Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic at Hanover Hall.
Dozens of girls in 6th grade and younger got to try playing various sports, from golf and soccer to volleyball and softball.
Members from most of UNCW’s women’s athletic programs helped teach and play with the girls taking part in the clinic.
Junior volleyball player Lilly Kirtley-Peyton said the event is a great way to introduce young girls to many different sports.
“You think of women’s sport and you think of like volleyball, you don’t think, or softball,” Kirtley-Peyton said. “You don’t think as much of like basketball or diving or golf. And so just getting to see all of the different sports for all of these young girls, it’s really helpful I think for the young generation to be more versatile and gain interest in different sports.”
Peyton added that she hopes the clinic continues as a yearly event to build young girls’ interest in sports.
The UNCW’s women’s basketball team put on a show following the clinic as they won 70-67 over Hofstra in overtime.
