NEW HANOVER COUNTY (WWAY) — For the first time since 2017, the UNCW Men’s Basketball team has won the CAA tournament.

Several gathered to watch the UNCW Men’s Basketball team face off against the Delaware Blue Hens in the CAA championship for their chance to go to the big dance.

“I feel pretty well. The stats are looking good. I trust my team,” said UNCW Sophomore Jayla Fredrick.

“I feel pretty great tonight. I think we’re going to win,” said UNCW Sophomore Leilani Terhume.

The game was played in Washington D.C. with a split crowd. However, inside the Shore Dining Hall on UNCW’s campus, it’s a different scene, a very united watch party.

UNCW juniors Colton and Mex say they’ve been to many games this season, and they believe the team is talented enough to get the championship win.

“We went to a lot of games- home games. This one is exciting. It’s a very special one,” Mex said.

Everyone’s eyes in the dining hall were glued to a jumbo screen, which centered the room. And of course, everyone rocked those Seahawks colors.

Meanwhile, at the Shuckin’ Shack in downtown Wilmington, another watch party underway. The bar and restaurant were full of Seahawk fans and there were also a few Delaware fans.

“It’s a close game. I’m cheering with the boys over there, but he’s lonely out here,” said one UNCW fan.

In the end, our Delaware fan may be the only one in Wilmington disappointed with the Seahawks pulling out a close victory to win the CAA tournament. Up next — March Madness!

Selection Sunday is this week. That is when the Seahawks will learn who they’ll play in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. It will be unveiled on WWAY CBS starting at 6 P.M.
