WILMINGTON, N.C. (WWAY) — The UNCW men’s basketball team defeated the College of Charleston on Feb. 9, earning a 76–64 victory in a key CAA matchup.

The win was a big one for the Seahawks, who were coming off a home loss to William & Mary on Feb. 5.

With the victory, UNCW improved to 20–4 overall and 9–2 in conference play, while the Cougars fell to 16–9 (9–3). Both teams entered the matchup with just two CAA losses, battling for the regular-season title and the No. 1 seed in the CAA Tournament.

Greedy Williams led the Seahawks with 16 points. Patrick Wessler added 15 points and 10 rebounds, while team-leading scorer Nolan Hodge finished with 12 points after being held scoreless in the first half.

For the Cougars, Jlynn Counter led all scorers with 20 points, and Christian Reeves posted a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

UNCW jumped out to a 15–4 lead early. Charleston battled back and cut the deficit to one late in the first half, but the Seahawks closed the period strong and took a 10-point lead into halftime.

While UNCW outscored the Cougars by just two points in the second half, the Seahawks maintained control for most of the final 20 minutes.

UNCW held the edge on the glass, outrebounding Charleston 39–37, including a 13–7 advantage in offensive rebounds. Turnovers also proved decisive, as UNCW committed just five compared to 13 by the Cougars.

The two teams will meet once more in the regular season on Sunday, March 1. The game will be UNCW’s final home contest and senior night.
