WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — The University of North Carolina Wilmington says it is aware of concerns about an upcoming campus event featuring Promise Keepers Chairman and CEO Shane Winnings.

The event, sponsored by the student chapter of Turning Point USA, is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, in Lumina Theater. UNCW officials said the student organization followed proper procedures to reserve the space.

A designated area for peaceful protests will be available and staffed by Campus Life.

In a statement, the university emphasized that student organizations and guest speakers do not speak on behalf of the university, and that use of campus space does not imply endorsement.

“As a member of the UNC System, UNCW follows the Equality Within the University of North Carolina Policy (300.8.5), which prohibits the university from advocating for or against contemporary political or social issues,” the statement said.

University officials said UNCW Police and the Division for Student Affairs are working with organizers to ensure safety measures are in place. Security plans include both visible and behind-the-scenes precautions, as well as a clear bag/no bag policy for attendees.

Students who feel impacted by the event may seek emotional support through the Counseling Center or the Office of the Dean of Students. Faculty and staff can access assistance through Employee Assistance Benefits.

UNCW also maintains a Freedom of Expression website that includes policy information, frequently asked questions and related resources.
