UNCW students head back to class, some remain displaced by storm
WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Classes resumed at UNCW Monday. For some students, they still can’t get inside their apartments.
The University Apartments remain closed as crews work to make sure they are safe for students.
“It’s really important to just go with the flow at this point and just be mindful of that. Everybody is coming back to some damaged items, some more than some,” Brittney Kamphey, student, said.
UNCW set up cots inside Hanover Gym for those students who couldn’t get into their
on-campus apartments, but only one student stayed overnight.
Many students say they’re just glad to finally get back to class.
“We just missed like such a chunk,” Bailey Broderick, student, said. “Like I got used to being back home that I came back and it was like I started all over again and it was like odd waking up to an alarm this morning. It was just so weird walking back.”
“It’s really important to just go with the flow at this point and just be mindful of that,” Kamphey said. “Everybody is coming back to some damaged items, some more than some but we’re all just one big community out here and we’re just helping as everything is coming back together.”
Many students are also thankful that their professors are patient with students and are not trying to rush through materials as they just get back to school.
“I actually had a lot of emails from my professors saying ‘if I can do anything for you, like let me know. We’re offering support,'” Kamphey said.
“They’ve been so helpful with how the schedule is going to go and just giving us all the information we need to make sure that we stay on track,” Broderick said.
As of Sunday evening, students were allowed back into Belk hall and students say it’s only a matter of time before things are back to normal.
