UNCW students react to mandatory storm evacuation

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — UNCW is not taking any chances with Hurricane Matthew. The university has already issued a mandatory evacuation for all students.

A post on UNCW’s Facebook page says students are encouraged to depart campus on Thursday morning and not to travel during the evening hours. Students must leave campus no later than 12 p.m. on Thursday.

WWAY stopped by campus on Tuesday evening to see if students are worried and how they’re preparing for the mandatory evacuation.

“I mean I feel like it’s a safe thing for the school to do,” UNCW Senior Josiah Nostrand said. “It’s Spring Break, or it’s Fall Break anyway and they might as well send everybody home.”

Other students said they’re planning to make sure they pick up items off the floor and unplug their electronics before the storm arrives.

All classes and other events at UNCW are cancelled as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

UNCW Fall Break was already scheduled to begin Thursday.
