UNCW WEEKEND SPORTS ROUNDUP: Volleyball, soccer and swimming
WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Senior forward Daniel Escobar (Cali, Colombia) scored the game’s only goal in the 67th minute to lead No. 22 UNCW to its first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Northeastern at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who remained unbeaten in five home games this year, improved to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the CAA. Playing in its conference opener, Northeastern dropped to 0-5-2 on the season and suffered its third consecutive loss.
After a scoreless first half, Escobar tallied his fourth goal of the season with 23:20 remaining on a header after passes from senior midfielder Jose Garcia (Woodward Academy/College Park, Ga.) and freshman midfielder Matt Gianfortone (Leesville Road H.S./Raleigh, N.C.).
Led by junior goalkeeper Sean Melvin (Victoria, British Columbia, Canada), the Seahawks held Northeastern to just four shots en route to claiming their fourth shutout of the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Jonathan Thuresson (Orebro, Sweden) posted two saves for the Huskies, who were shut out for the second game in a row.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Fueled by 20 kills from junior Nicole Lott and a school-record tying 11 total blocks by freshman Anna Moss, UNCW edged preseason Colonia Athletic Association favorite College of Charleston, 3-2 (25-19, 25-14, 14-25, 20-25, 15-9), on Friday in the league opener for both teams at Hanover Hall.
The Seahawks, who won their fourth straight match, improved to 10-3 with the win while CofC dipped to 8-7. UNCW and through Cougars have split their last four showdowns with the last two going five sets.
Junior Kristen Powell joined Lott in double digits with 10 kills and finished off her second double-double of her career with 13 digs. Setter Alyssa Desjardins finished with 31 assists while senior Lindsay Hartmann collected a team-high 15 digs.
Melissa Morello and Kennedy Madison paced CofC with 18 and 16 kills, respectively. Mackenzie Cooler came off the bench and finished with 32 assists. McKala Rhodes recorded a match-high 30 digs as CofC built a 73-50 advantage in that category.
UNCW opened the match winning the first two sets, but CofC rallied to force a fifth set by winning the next two sets.
Up next: The Seahawks continue their seven-match homestand on Oct. 2 with a 7 p.m. start against Northeastern.
How it happened: In the fifth set, UNCW ran out to a 5-1 lead behind its blocking. In that stretch, Moss collected three block assists and solo block. The Seahawks built a six-point cushion, 11-5, on a block from Moss and Desjardins. UNCW finished the match with a school-record 19.5 total blocks.
Notes: The Seahawks avenged a five-set loss to CofC in last year’s CAA Championship semifinal … Moss tied the school-record of 11 last done by teammate Meredith Peacock, who did so twice in 2013 … Peacock finished the night with nine kills and eight total blocks … Powell added six blocks of her own … UNCW’s eight aces were the second highest total of the season (10 vs App. State, Aug. 29) … Lott had three of UNCW’s eight aces … The win was career number 94 for UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenk … Tonight’s attendance was announced at 812, a season high.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Junior forward Moa Jarl (Gothenburg, Sweden) scored a goal and assist as UNCW extended its win streak to seven consecutive games with a 3-2 victory over Drexel in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams at UNCW Soccer Stadium on Friday evening.
The Seahawks, who snapped a three-game winless streak against the Dragons, improved to 8-3-0 on the season and 1-0-0 in the CAA. Drexel suffered its second straight loss and dropped 6-4-0 overall and 0-1-0 in the CAA.
UNCW sprinted out to a 2-0 lead in the opening seven minutes of the game. Senior midfielder Stephanie Bronson (Leesville H.S./Raleigh, N.C.) scored just 3:58 into the match when she one-timed a crossing pass from junior forward Katrina Guillou (Bishop Ireton H.S./Fort Washington, Md.) for her third goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Jarl upped the advantage to 2-0 when she scored her first goal of the season off a corner kick from junior midfielder Kennedy Ulrich (Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada).
With 3:14 remaining in the first half, sophomore midfielder Kylie Strong (Red Lion Area Senior H.S./York, Pa.) trimmed the Drexel deficit to 2-1 when she bent a corner kick into the goal over junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman H.S./Huntersville, N.C.).
Senior forward Maddie McCormick (Alexis I. DuPont H.S./Newark, Del.) extended the Seahawks’ edge to 3-1 just over five minutes into the second half when she took a through pass from Jarl and scored on a two-touch shot into the near post.
The Dragons narrowed the gap in the 63rd minute as freshman forward Vanessa Kara (Moorestown Friends H.S./Burlington, N.J.) took advantage of a UNCW turnover and tallied her sixth goal of the year with a shot to the far post.
Huddy, the reigning CAA Co-Player of the Week, made two saves, including a stop of a penalty kick in the 34th minute, as UNCW limited Drexel to just nine shots, including three attempts in the first half.
Graduate student goalkeeper Eve Badana (Markham, Ontario, Canada) tallied six saves for the Dragons in the loss.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Freshman Thompson Schille won two events and swam on UNCW’s wining 400 Freestyle Relay, but the Seahawks dropped a pair of meets to Tennessee in the season-opening event for both programs on Friday at the Seahawk Natatorium.
Schille, who was making his collegiate debut, gave UNCW wins in the 100 Free (47.82 seconds), 400 IM (4:10.22) and joined Tad Spence, Sawyer Dove and Tyler Titsch in winning the 400 Free Relay to a winning time of 3:12.06.
Adding a win for the Seahawk men was Spence, who took top honors in the 50 Free with a time of 24.25.
Junior Marissa Martinez picked up UNCW’s lone win in the women’s meet when she clocked in with a winning time of 53.65 in the 100 Free.
In the men’s 100 Free, Alexander Sabau gave UNCW a 1-2 finish when he placed second behind Schille with a time of 48.16.
Tennessee combined to win 25 races with Chris Sadsad the only Volunteer to win two individual events. He claimed the 50 Free and 50 Butterfly events.
In diving action, UNCW won all four events, which were exhibitioned. Bri Urich won the women’s 1-meter while Rachel McCormick took the 2-meter board. Nathan Lane and Allen Crosby won the 1 and 3-meter events, respectively.
Up next: The Seahawks return to the pool on Oct. 2 with a 2 p.m. start at longtime rival Old Dominion.

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — Senior forward Katrina Guillou (Bishop Ireton H.S./Fort Washington, Md.) scored two goals as UNCW battled to a 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association double overtime tie against Delaware at rain-soaked UNCW Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Seahawks, who had their unbeaten streak extended to eight consecutive games, improved to 8-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the CAA. Delaware, which ended a two-game losing streak, moved its record to 5-5-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the CAA.
Guillou gave UNCW a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute when she scored on a one-timer inside the six-yard penalty area off assists from seniors Maddie McCormick (Alexis I. DuPont H.S./Newark, Del.) and Stephanie Bronson (Leesville H.S./Raleigh, N.C.).
With 23:12 left in the first half, the Blue Hens tied the game when sophomore defender Michelle Burnett (Annandale H.S./Springfield, Va.) converted a crossing pass from freshman forward Riley Curtin (Hershey H.S./Hershey, Pa.) for her second goal of the season.
Just over a minute into the second half, Guillou reclaimed the one-goal edge for the Seahawks when she made a long run past several Delaware defenders and scored on a 10-yard shot for her fifth goal of the season.
But, the Blue Hens evened the score again with 12:47 left in regulation as sophomore midfielder Krista Trinidad (John F. Kennedy H.S./Merrick, N.Y.) tallied her second goal of the season on an assist from senior midfielder Alison Stark (St. John’s H.S./Kensington, Md.).
The Seahawks outshot Delaware by a 6-2 margin in the overtime periods, but sophomore goalkeeper Kailyn Rekos (Groton Dunstable Regional H.S./Groton, Mass.) made two of her eight saves to preserve the tie for the Blue Hens.
Junior goalkeeper Carolyn Huddy (Lake Norman Charter School/Huntersville, N.C.) tallied two saves for the Seahawks, who outshot Delaware by a commanding 25-10 margin.
Prior to the start of the game, the Seahawks were honored with a ceremonial kick-off from their adopted teammate Baylee Adkins. Adkins took the kick-off and dribbled down the field before scoring a goal.
