UNCW’s Gage Herring wins Rookie-of-the-week again

WILMINGTON, North Carolina (UNCWSports.com) – Six shutout innings and carrying a no-hitter into the sixth landed UNCW freshman pitcher Gage Herring Colonial Athletic Association Rookie-of-the-Week honors on Monday.

The righthander was named CAA Rookie-of-the-Week earlier this season on Mar. 26 following a strong performance in a win over Hofstra. Two other Seahawks have earned the honor with Landen Roupp (Mar. 6) and Noah Liles (Mar. 19) also doing so in March.

Herring’s six inning were a season-high as were his five strikeouts. He held Delaware hitless into the sixth before a one-out single ended his bid.

For the season, Herring is 2-0 with a 2.08 earned run average and has limited opponents to a .169 batting average. He made six appearances as a reliever before joining the rotation for the Hofstra series.

The Seahawks (21-14) open an eight-game homestand on Apr. 18 with a 6 p.m. start against nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina (26-12). UNCW returns to conference play this weekend hosting Towson beginning on Friday.
