UNCW’s Shields named CAA baseball Player of the Week

WILMINGTON, NC (UNCW) — UNCW junior outfielder Zach Shields was named Colonial Athletic Association Player-of-the-Week after helping the Seahawks to an impressive 4-1 record last week, including a sweep of a red-hot Delaware squad over the weekend.

Shields became the fifth Seahawk to earn the honor after hitting .421 with five runs scored, a double and a home run. Shields drove in seven runs and stole a base. Against Delaware he scored four runs, knocked in five and hit .545. His two-run home run in the series finale propelled the Seahawks to a 12-2 win and a series sweep.

On the season, Shields leads the Seahawks with a .362 batting average and is second on the team with 14 stolen bases and tied for second with 32 runs batted in. During his current eight-game hitting streak, Shields is hitting .429 with eight runs scored and 10 knocked in.

The Seahawks return to action this Friday when they visit conference-leading College of Charleston for a three-game series. Friday will be a 6 p.m. start.
